A government source has described the impending pay rise for Dáil TDs as 'embarrassing'

The country's 174 TDs are to get a bumper pay rise of €2,273, a mere three months after being elected to office.

Since the General Election on November 29 last year, the 34th Dáil has sat for four days in total to allow negotiations to form the new Government. The new coalition of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Regional Independents was eventually elected last month. The salaries of Dáil members has soared from over €90,000 to €113,679 since the financial crash in 2008. They also get paid lavish expenses on top of their big salaries.
