LATEST UPDATE: All evacuations lifted as firefighters slow Boulder’s NCAR fire

About 200 firefighters from 30 agencies attacked the blaze Saturday and about 150 firefighters and support staff continued working the fire Sunday, Smith said.

The NCAR fire began just three months after the Marshall fire, which started in Boulder County in late December and was driven east by hurricane-force winds, destroying more than 1,000 homes. Smith, who was also in charge of the firefighting response for the Marshall fire, said the two fires are “different animals.”

Using that new wireless system meant some people received evacuation alerts who were not actually in danger, Huntley said. Saturday’s evacuation alert through the wireless system went out to cellphones in Louisville, Superior and parts of Boulder where evacuation was unnecessary, she said. She acknowledged that the wider alerts can make it more difficult for people to evacuate by unnecessarily crowding roads and key evacuation routes. The first pre-evacuation alert went out at 2:48 p.m. Saturday on the Everbridge system, followed at 3 p.m. by an evacuation order. At 3:14 p.m., the wireless alert system was used to alert cellphones in the Table Mesa area. Another wireless alert went out at 5 p.m. for Boulder County south of the city limits, Huntley said in an email.
