'When I say that swimming changed my life, I mean it literally.' A decade ago, Annie Wohlgemuth wasn't sure what athletic events she might be able to try. Now, the PVSHARKSsports senior heads the Times-Union's All-First Coast girls swimming team.

"When I say that swimming changed my life," she said,"I mean it literally."

A versatile swimmer, she also placed second in the 100 butterfly, a massive collection of points that enabled Ponte Vedra to bring home its second straight Florida High School Athletic Association team championship. She took up swimming when she was 7 years old, part of a physical therapy regimen designed to help her overcome a joint condition that was disrupting her daily life.

Temotio, who first began coaching Wohlgemuth around age 11, recalled that the transition to backstroke began with a race in the 50 back. Although it wasn't Wohlgemuth's specialty at the time, she took to it at once. She had placed second in the 100 back and fourth in the 100 fly in the fall of 2021, but when she touched the wall in November at the Class 3A finals, she realized that the path that started with physical therapy a decade earlier had led her to a state backstroke championship.
