Hayden Miller caps career with state titles in 200 and 500 freestyle.
Hayden Miller competes in the Class 6A girls 500-yard freestyle during the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships at Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, in Austin.So when the Cypress Creek senior got one last chance to swim at the UIL state meet, she did not take that opportunity for granted. Just the opposite, in fact. She came away with two gold medals.
Miller took first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle events in Class 6A, putting a huge bow on a high school career full of accomplishments. The future University of Florida swimmer touched the wall at 1:46.35 in the 200, winning the event by more than two seconds. She followed that up by going 4:40.66 in the 500 to earn her second career gold in the event. That time broke her own 6A record that she set during prelims the previous day.
The two medals she earned this season doubled her collection. Miller took silver in the 200 last year and was the state champion in the 500 as a freshman in 2019. For a record-setting finish to her career, Miller is the All-Greater Houston girls swimmer of the year.“I definitely wanted to win state in the 500 because I previously won it my freshman year, and I just thought that would be a cool way to end my high school swimming career. And then the 200 free, I think last year I got second in it, so I just wanted to improve from that race, and I ended up with the best time, so I was happy with both of my swims.”“Just to try my best.
