The PwC sponsored All Star awards are picked this week with football up first on Thursday morning and the hurling team named live on RTE on Friday night

Controversy will rage. It always does when it comes to the prestigious scheme, now in its 57th season, having started out in 1971.

Their mentality is hugely impressive, but where do you start and end? An impact sub award? A panel of 20? The generally accepted way now is that the selectors attempt to pick as close to the 15 best players as possible, without putting them in positions they never play as this would lack credibility. Identifying really good individual defenders in well drilled defensive systems is not easy. A proper man marking job nowadays is generally not what it was a decade ago.

An All Star nomination may not be as significant in Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and Tyrone, but it's an invaluable promotional tool in counties looking to take a leap forward. When Enda Smith won an All Star last year - despite Roscommon exiting in a preliminary quarter-final - he was the first player honoured that didn’t line out in an All-Ireland semi-final since Michael Murphy in 2019.

If Craig Lennon , Con O’Callaghan , Ryan O’Donoghue , Brian O Beaglaoich and Niall Morgan make the cut tomorrow, which could happen, there will be seven counties represented in this year’s team. There is little of that any more with the All-Ireland football final having taken place three months ago.
