Apple's App Store is fighting a regulatory firestorm that stretches across the globe. Here are all the countries investigating its 'monopolistic' payment system.
Apple is trying to fight the changes on all fronts, but sheer the number of regulatory attacks likely mean lucrative bricks may soon be knocked from the company's walled garden.
Apple was fined €5 million for noncompliance and will be fined weekly, up to €50 million, until it complies, according to the regulator.Japan ordered Apple to open up third-party payments for a segment of apps dubbed"reader" apps: digital magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music and video. Apple told the Yonhap News Agency that it has a"strong history" of working with developers in the country."Our work will always be guided by keeping the App Store a safe and trusted place for our users to download the apps they love," the company said.The UK's Competition and Markets Authority launched an investigation in March into Apple's terms and conditions for developers after it received complaints that the agreements were"unfair and anti-competitive.
Senators Richard Blumenthal, Amy Klobuchar, and Marsha Blackburn introduced legislation dubbed the Open App Markets Act in August, and it garnered support from other high-profile senators including Lindsey Graham, Cory Booker, Marco Rubio and Mazie Hirono. The Indian regulatory body's prima facie decision — guilty until proven otherwise — came within months of the charity opening its case, which compared the restrictive app environment on iOS devices to the relatively open market for app downloads on Apple Mac computers.
