On the same night, the former Conservative chancellor Lord Ken Clarke offered his own stinging rebuke of the mini-Budget. “They have made a catastrophic start, the Budget was a serious mistake and it has caused a serious problem,” he told“I must admit I have never known a Budget cause a financial crisis immediately like this. When I listened to the budget I was rather astounded by its contents and I hope we very rapidly get out of it.
He said the leaders were facing an inflationary recession, but he disagreed with their approach to stimulate growth by giving tax cuts to the very rich and bonuses to bankers. Lord Clarke, who said he voted for Rishi Sunak, said he thought the leaders were motivated by getting a glowing headline in theChancellor Kwasi Kwarteng now had to make a reassuring statement, he said: “They’ve now got to demonstrate they are responsibly setting out on the right course.”
