As Katie Taylor prepares for her homecoming fight at Croke Park, the undercard features David Allen nearing retirement, former Irish Olympian Emmet Brennan seeking a career reboot, and Molly McCann fighting in tribute to her late grandmother who shares a connection with the main event star.
Saturday's boxing line-up at Croke Park presents a fascinating mix of personalities and career stages, headlined by a heavyweight nearing the end of his professional journey, a former Irish Olympian seeking to relaunch his stalled career, and a Liverpudlian fighter who shares family ties with the night's main star.
The English heavyweight David Allen, now 34, is preparing for his 39th professional bout against Dublin's Thomas Carty, and has announced that his 40th fight will be his last. At Thursday's undercard press conference held at The Helix in Dublin, Allen appeared visibly relaxed and disinterested, wearing the same casual outfit repeatedly while Carty arrived dressed sharply in a checked dinner jacket with a moody tie, looking as though he were heading to a countryside wedding.
Allen openly admitted that the desire to compete has largely faded since his bout with Filip Hrgović, stating that he harbors no ambitions for titles and is simply there to fight. He acknowledged concerns about his weight and conditioning but insisted that at his level he remains a difficult opponent to defeat, warning Carty that if he cannot beat Allen at this stage of his career, he should consider giving up boxing entirely.
The tension between the two was palpable, with Allen having recently taunted Carty on social media by posting a video of himself eating an ice-cream loaded with sprinkles, strawberry syrup and chocolate flakes, telling his future opponent to relax and enjoy life. Despite his apparent nonchalance, Allen was clearly relishing the verbal exchange, while Carty refused to be intimidated, declaring that if there was ever a moment to dig deep and produce a career-best performance, it would be Saturday night under the lights at Croke Park.
The undercard also features Emmet Brennan, a Dublin fighter who represented Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics but whose career and personal life drifted off course in the years that followed. Brennan now has the chance to relaunch his professional trajectory when he faces the heavily favored Taylor Bevan on Saturday.
Growing up in the shadow of Croke Park, with the famous Cusack Stand visible from his front door, Brennan described fighting at the venue as beyond anything he could have imagined as a child. He stressed, however, that the occasion means nothing without victory and expressed his determination to win rather than simply be a footnote in the event's history.
The only other women's bout on the card, outside of the Katie Taylor main event, will see Molly McCann take on Sylwia Doligala. McCann carries additional motivation for the night because of her family connection to Taylor, revealing that her grandmother left Bray in the early 1960s and passed away in her thirties, cementing a personal bond with the headline act that extends far beyond the ring.
With sixteen boxers competing across the undercard, each arrives at Croke Park at a different point in their journey, but all share the unique opportunity to perform in front of what promises to be one of the largest crowds ever assembled for a boxing event in Ireland
