Almost 200-years of history brought to sad end as south Manchester landmark bulldozed
Crowds gathered at the Platt Fields end of the Curry Mile today as a south Manchester landmark was torn down. Fascinated students were joined by saddened locals as construction workers demolished Hardy's Well.
A poetic mural from Lemn Sissay was proudly painted onto the gable side of Hardy's Well, celebrating the joys of drinking with friends in a good old-fashioned boozer. This was lost today as the wall it had adorned for nearly 30 years was torn down. When it was created in 1994 it was possibly the first major piece of public poetry in the country.
More than 100 could be fit in the beer garden where the Lemn Sissay poem towered over. The pub was also a popular spot for Manchester City fans when the club called nearby Maine Road its home and hosted a variety of entertainment shows and music. There was a pool table and real ales to suit the traditional pub goer as well as food served, including curry.
Charred wooden beams and a sofa could be seen among the pile of rubble. The building came down with ease as bricks, including fragments of Lemn's poem, spilled onto Wilmslow Road, which was closed southbound to facilitate the demolition. "The beer garden was really popular, it's tragic to see the poem being knocked down. It had so much history in it, I remember going to the upstairs rooms once where it was said dignitaries used to meet back in the 19th century.
