Fernando Alonso made what turned out to be an ill-judged move to new slick tyres just as the rain got heavy in the MonacoGP. But the Aston Martin has defended his tyre choice, saying the track was 99% dry at that time. F1

Alonso subsequently made his first trip to the pitlane at the end of the 54th lap of 78 and, against the run of play, collected a set of medium tyres.Max VerstappenThis added stop put Alonso over 20 seconds behind, costing him a realistic chance of breaking Red Bull's stranglehold over victories in 2023.

"We had a lot of margin behind us to put on the dry tyres and if necessary, the inter tyres. Maybe it was extra safe, I don't know.
