🛒 Amazon has signalled it is struggling to win over British shoppers with its futuristic cashierless stores by shutting down one of its branches after just 16 months in business

, Amazon’s promise of a “frictionless” shopping experience enabled by its “Just Walk Out” technology has struggled to entice the public away from familiar chains such as Tesco and Aldi, retail experts said. Shoppers in Dalston, east London, have given a wide berth to the Amazon Fresh in their area since it opened in September, with the expensive cameras and motion sensors packing the store proving no competition for other local supermarkets where customers are unable to bypass the checkout but where prices are likely to be lower.
Amazon has opened two new Fresh sites this week – one in Croydon, in south London, and the other at Monument, in the City centre – but industry figures have predicted more closures are on the cards and believe the business might eventually pull the plug on all 15 of its UK stores. Fourteen of these stores are located in London and one is in Kent.
