A major new study has revealed that the Amazon rainforest has been trashed much more than previously thought
has been uncovered that is equivalent to about 2 per cent of the world’s recorded annual emissions.
“Despite uncertainty about the total effect of these disturbances, it is clear that their cumulative effect can be as important as deforestation for carbon emissions and biodiversity loss,” Professor Barlow said. Degradation, meanwhile, comes from forest fire, edge effects , selective logging and extreme drought. Even though highly degraded areas of forests can lose almost all of the trees, the land use itself does not change and so it is not classed as being deforested.
“In some cases, smoke from fires gets blown all the way to the Andes and settles on glaciers, increasing the melt rate of key water supplies,” according to David Lapola of Brazil’s University of Campinas .
