The Deer King is a winning Nahoko Uehashi adaptation that struggles with stuffing so much story into just two hours. mhcovill's review:
Moribito: Guardian of the Spiritlooks like it was highly influenced by the Studio Ghibli film, and by extension Hayao Miyazaki, created a lush forest landscape where the destruction of the environment led to a curse that the protagonist must overcome. The curse itself looks like a sea of slugs, completely engulfing the characters. That’s not unlike the Black Wolf Fever which moves like a giant ooze of purple miasma that tears through whoever is in its path.
The extended cast spends a lot of time talking about the politics between the two rival nations, Zol and Aquafa. A lengthy prologue delivered through on-screen text is supposed to fill in the gaps in the conflict, but it isn’t enough to get the audience fully invested. Apparently, Zol had previously conquered Aquafa, except for one territory where the plague originates from.
