The announcement of the acquisition of Pensando, as well as the recent acquisition of Xilinx, gives AMD an opportunity to become a major player in determining the design of future of data centers.

. AMD’s CEO Lisa Su referred to Pensando’s solutions as a “leading distributed services platform,” which for lack of an easier way to say it is that Pensando provides offload chips and software that perform many of the overhead functions required in a data center more efficiently than running those workloads on CPUs. Others call this function a Data Processing Unit or Infrastructure Processing Unit .

In terms of its competitive position, Pensando claims to provide many times the performance of other solutions at a fraction of the power and cost, which translates into a valuable reduction in the total cost of ownership , a valuable metric for data centers. While Tirias Research cannot verify these claims at this time, they appear to be supported by many of Pensando’s customers.

In addition, Pensando has an impressive list of customers, including cloud service providers Azure, Equinix, IBM, and Oracle; enterprise customers Goldman Sachs, NetApp, and Wells Fargo; and system solutions providers Dell, Ericsson, HPE, and Qualcomm. According to Pensando, the company has been working closely with AMD and in conjunction with AMD’s Epyc CPUs for many of its customer engagements.
