Del Rio officials lament the loss saying the air service contributes to the economic health of the city.

American Airlines is ending air service at the airport in April.Del Rio International Airport is losing its only carrier service later this year, delivering a blow to the South Texas economy.

“Due to soft demand and the regional pilot shortage affecting the airline industry, American Airlines has made the difficult decision to end service in Del Rio,” an American spokesman said in an email Sunday. “We’ll proactively reach out to customers scheduled to travel to offer alternate arrangements.”

“The loss of the air services affects our community in a substantial way,” Mayor Alvaro “Al” Arreola said in a text. “The City of Del Rio works extremely hard to provide the quality of life that they deserve,” he said. “Providing a way home to their families across the country and the globe is undoubtedly an accommodation they need.”
