The Fort Worth-based airline hasn’t made a profit without government help since the end of 2019 but thinks it could be in the black by June even after losing $1.6 billion for the first three months of 2022.

“In March, we saw what’s possible, with surging demand brought on by reduced infection rates, relaxed restrictions and tremendous pent-up demand for people to travel,” CEO Robert Isom said Thursday as the company reported a $1.6 billion loss for the first three months of this year. “Demand is as strong as we’ve ever seen it.”

It also weathered heavy spring break crowds without any operational problems, although the first weekend of April was a challenge. On-time arrivals were some of the best in company history for the month of March and that, in turn, boosted American to one of its first profitable stretches since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

American has responded by scheduling 25% more flights than its next biggest competitor and adding 12,000 employees in the last year, all in preparation for this moment. American’s schedule is about 94% larger than it was in summer 2019, when it had about 6,000 more workers.
