President Joe Biden cheered the country's economic recovery in a speech at the White House on Friday, pointing to his administration's vaccination effort and the sweeping COVID-19 relief plan passed by Democrats more than one year ago.“We’re building a recovery worthy of American workers, strong and resilient,” he added. “Our policies are working, and we’re getting results for the American people.
Still, the job market has continued to rebound with unexpected speed from the coronavirus recession. Job openings are at a near-record level, and applications for unemployment benefits have dropped to near their lowest point since 1969. The recession wiped out 22 million jobs in March and April 2020, as businesses shut down or cut hours and Americans stayed home to avoid infection.
The president pointed to his announcement Thursday that the U.S. would release up to 180 million barrels of oil from its strategic petroluem reserves, in concert with international allies who have promised to release millions more of their own oil.
