NHL: Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl have combined for one goal in seven games as San Jose Sharks are off to a 1-6-0 start.
Timo Meier has never before gone seven games to start a season without scoring at least once. Tomas Hertl has never before gone seven games to start a season without scoring at least twice.
Meier, who had 35 goals and a 10.7 percent shooting percentage last season, remains without a goal despite 29 shots on net. The Sharks got a sharp-looking second-period goal from Kevin Labanc and 35 saves from goalie Kaapo Kahkonen, who repeatedly bailed out his team after a handful of puck management gaffes by the skaters in front of him.
Asked if those players’ offensive frustrations have led to some bad decision-making with the puck, Quinn said, “that’s exactly what happens. You want to impact the game so much, you want to help your team so much that sometimes you force things.” Considering the giveaway in their own zone that led to Yegor Sharangovich’s even-strength goal, and a reckless goalie interference penalty by Evgeny Svechnikov that led to Dawson Mercer’s power-play goal, the Sharks have little margin for error when it comes to collecting two points on a regular basis.
It’s unfair to place all of the Sharks’ scoring woes at Meier and Hertl’s feet. But the paltry offensive numbers are a clear example that if those players aren’t going, the Sharks have few forwards left to turn to for goals.
