Longtime Shawnee boys basketball coach one win away from No. 700

“That first year may have been rough at the time, but he grew as a coach,” said Valore, who faced Kessler many times while in the Olympic Conference. “When you went up against Joe, you knew he was someone who scouted you religiously and made it very difficult to play.Said Allen, the longtime coach at Atlantic City: “When I started as a young guy, I thought he was the best and I still think he’s one of the best. He’s just phenomenal, unbelievable.
His resume includes 19 Olympic Conference titles, 12 South Jersey crowns, six state championships and a Tournament of Champions title back in 1992. “It’s an exciting moment,” Kessler told NJ Advance Media. “I really have to give credit to all of the assistants that I’ve had and the players. You don’t win without good players, and over the past 35 years I’ve had kids that have bought into our system and really blossomed.
“To look at them 15, 20, 25 years later and see how successful they are … it’s a proud moment to be a part of their success as well,” he said. “You feel you’ve helped them along as basketball players and to become better people. “One of the best things he does is coaching the game of basketball versus just the X’s and O’s. Sometimes coaches are so into the X’s and O’s, telling guys what to do,” Earl said. “Basketball is a game where you have to make decisions on the court and one of the best things he did was teach us how to play. Joe is a great teacher of the game.
