Both Broadhurst and Lisa O'Rourke, who are former world champions, will not have the chance to make it to Paris as Gráinne Walsh gets the nod
Amy Broadhurst is poised to turn pro after being overlooked for a last chance qualification for Paris 2024.
Former world champs Broadhurst, 27, and Lisa O'Rourke have lost out again to Gráinne Walsh for the chance to compete in the final qualification Olympic tournament in Bangkok in two months time. Walsh got the nod at welterweight in the recent World Olympic qualifier in Italy and has been handed the final opportunity after she was controversially beaten with a place in Paris on the line.Broadhurst, who had to move from super lightweight - which is not an Olympic category - to welterweight - has always said her lifelong dream was to compete at an Olympics.
The Dundalk boxer is unhappy because she believed there would be a fresh assessment of the trio's form ahead of selection for Bangkok. Instead, she was informed on Wednesday from IABA high performance chief Tricia Heberle that herself and O'Rourke were being assessed for the European Championships instead, with Walsh heading to the Far East.
