An ode to Hilary Banks from 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-air'—the bougie big sister of my dreams.
Hilary’s evolution from spoiled daddy’s girl to, well, still-semi-spoiled adult but with her own talk show was nearly exactly what my preteen self craved. I admired that she worked her personality in order to get what she wanted and in doing so curated the life she knew she deserved.Hilary moved throughout the series with blind confidence and autonomy, and when I was watching with adolescent eyes, that didn’t seem feasible for someone like me.
I started experimenting with fashion, trying out scene girl, tomboy, butch queen first time in drag at a ball, and copious others until I landed on prepster. My preppy look then was far from Hilary approved, but it’s since evolved into a version I’ve mastered and made my own. I’ve gone from oxford argyle sweater vests and popped collars to fitted tartan wiggle skirts and blush-colored sweater sets paired with gold chains and a statement luxury bag.
