Astros do enough to slip past Rangers in 10 innings
The Texas Rangers pray in the dugout before the start of the first inning of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022 in Houston.Complacency appears the Astros’ most menacing opponent. They are playing games with no actual stakes, a September luxury only a handful of clubs can relish.
The Astros are not playing a beautiful brand of baseball. Effort is not a question, but execution absolutely is. Flashes of their true form appear in spurts. On Wednesday, two frames of competence sufficed. Texas’ incompetence handed Neris the win. The team intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez to load the bases with two outs, putting the winning run 90 feet away. A pitch later, Jonathan Hernández uncorked a wild pitch that sent him home — an ending perfectly apt for this awful game.“That’s what you call an ugly win,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We’ll take it. A win is a win. In the big leagues, the hardest thing you can do is a win.
Otherwise, Javier tied Texas in knots. He generated 19 swings against his slider. Ten were whiffs. The Rangers averaged just an 86.1 mph exit velocity on the 13 balls they put in play. The bottom four hitters in Texas’ order finished 0-for-7 against him. Only some suspect Astros defense could save them.
Peña’s gaffe put Javier in a predicament. It eroded his efficiency and almost ensured a short outing. The 25-pitch frame left him at 53 for the game. Javier survived only two more innings, a truncated appearance not aided by Peña’s error.
