Gregor Chisholm: Danny Jansen blast just enough for Jays in Texas series opener
had the others. Pérez became the hard-luck loser after striking out three across six innings in a quality start.
That shouldn’t have been enough offence to win, but it was because of another strong outing by Gausman. The Jays ace scattered four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings. His lone blemish came in the third, when Leody Taveras hit a no-doubter to right-centre field for a solo homer.
Gausman’s impressive performance came on the heels of an uncharacteristically bad start against the Minnesota Twins. In that game he allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks, and the amount of hard contact led some to believe Gausman might have been tipping his pitches. If he was, Gausman got the problem resolved by Friday.
The victory improved the Jays’ record to 10-5 over their last 15 games, but they’ve also lost each of their last two series. A victory on Saturday or Sunday would give them their first series win since taking three of four from the Astros from June 5 to 8.
