The opening night of the interprovincial series saw a string of new rules tested at Croke Park. Reaction has been mixed, but what worked and what needs to be binned.

The choreography has been painstaking, and it all played out last night under the Croke Park floodlights.Jim Gavin wouldn’t be involved otherwise - or have it any other way.READ MORE: Fans react to the GAA 's new proposed rules and they are all saying the same thing

The big success appeared to be kickouts having to go beyond the 40 metre scoring arc with play transitioning far faster up the field than before. That scourge of Gaelic football, which has blighted it so badly in recent years, conceding the kickout and retreating out the field, wasn’t in evidence last night.

Referee Martin McNally had two linespeople to keep an eye on whether teams were holding three players inside the opposition 65 at all time and the ref mike indicated he was reminding them of this. The trick now is working out if these new rules are required at all when it will be completely different in the Championship. When Gavin was with Dublin he tended to be at the cutting edge of any new language on the go.If you bamboozle people and get them googling, it tends to impress a large enough cohort, and this has been a highly impressive operation to date.

Not a proper testing ground for whatever was being looked at. What is happening over this weekend couldn’t be further away from that.
