Jim McGuinness and the journalist Declan Bogue fell out over a book about the 2011 Ulster Championship

On the day after Donegal won their second All-Ireland in 2012, manager Jim McGuinness sat down with reporters in the team hotel. There had been a curious footnote to the win over Mayo, as he'd refused to do a press conference with the journalist Declan Bogue present. That was due to issues McGuinness had with Kevin Cassidy being one of those who'd collaborated on a book 'This Is Our Year' with Bogue.

A couple of weeks later, McGuinness sat down for an interview with Highland Radio. He covered a lot of ground and, at one stage, the subject of Cassidy and Bogue came up. The Glenties man said that Bogue would be welcome at a Donegal press conference if he wrote an article ''rectifying the untruths'' in the book. He never specified what these ''untruths'' were. McGuinness finished by stating that it was all ''water under the bridge''.

McGuinness stood his ground, arguing that the book got in the way of the goal of Donegal winning an All-Ireland. Kimmage pointed out that Bogue was just doing his job, McGuinness wasn't having it. Now there are plenty who feel - often with justification - that those of us in the media can be far too precious, and that we have a tendency to jump on high horses. But it's very hard to figure out why McGuinness seems to be nurturing a 13 year old grudge. He has never given any proper explanation of what Bogue supposedly did wrong.
