Former Louth forward Andy McDonnell makes a surprise return to the team, joining Ger Brennan's squad for the 2025 season.

Ger Brennan has made a surprise move for former Louth stalwart Andy McDonnell. McDonnell, a forward who last played for Louth in 2021, was part of the team that lost to Meath in the 2010 Leinster final. Last year Brennan led Louth to their first ever All-Ireland quarter-final, having defeated Meath in Championship football for the first time since 1975. Brennan is clearly in no mood to rest on his laurels in a county that has made great strides in recent years.

Louth also reached last year’s Leinster under-20 final, recording a shock semi-final victory over Dublin, while Craig Lennon became just the county’s second ever All Star. The move for Newtown Blues man McDonnell, reported by LMFM, is nonetheless a surprise. McDonnell has been training with the extended Wee County squad and will be hoping to make the cut when Brennan selects his squad for 2025. Louth face Fermanagh in the Jimmy McGeough Cup game in Haggardstown next Saturday evening (5pm). McDonnell, who can operate at midfield or in the half forward line, is a player who can cover a lot of ground and also has an eye for a score
