Ms. Pat Edwards (70), of Deise Animal Sanctuary, Knocknaree, Ballymacarbry was before the court on Tuesday, November 26 where she pleaded guilty to causing suffering to or endangering the health and welfare of a variety of animals in February 2023.

A court has heard how animals at a Waterford sanctuary were living with 'significant' health risks and untreated conditions and injuries in a case of 'obvious neglect.' Ms. Pat Edwards , of Deise Animal Sanctuary, Knocknaree, Ballymacarbry was before the court on Tuesday, November 26 where she pleaded guilty to causing suffering to or endangering the health and welfare of a variety of animals in February 2023.

She was accompanied by Veterinary Inspector Catherine O’Brien and ISPCA Senior Inspector Alice Lacey, and found "debris, rubbish, building materials and hazards posing a significant risk to the health and welfare of the animals" at the site.READ MORE: Ireland weather: Exact date weather maps to turn purple and potential 600km blanket of snow to cover country

Six of these animals were euthanised on humane grounds, including five buzzards with fractures that had not received appropriate treatment and who it was deemed "had no possibility of rehabilitation." Ms Lacey further told the court that an inspection conducted last week found that new animals had been admitted - in contravention of the notice - and that the animals’ living conditions were still sub-standard. One dog had been euthanised by a vet since that visit.
