When I suggest Rani isn’t too far away from Archie, she smiles. “Ooh I like that. They’re both unafraid to be assertive; there’s no batting eyelashes.”
As well as taking on those decisive roles when they come along, Mohindra wants to drive the conversation forward behind the scenes – particularly when it comes to women of colour. “I’d like to just focus on the acting and writing, but there’s always going to be a certain element of activism that you have to do – or that you accidentally do,” she explains. “When audiences visualise a character as white and you’re not, you find yourself at the heart of a massive conversation about race.
Mindfulness helps. So does talking to friends and family, and writing. “You’ve got to chase your joy,” she says. She’s written a script about Princess Sophia Duleep, the British-Indian suffragette who was a key figure in the early 20century women’s rights movement. It’s just one of many TV and film projects Mohindra is keen to get off the ground, reclaiming and reframing her own narrative as a British-Indian woman in the process.
