Ann Wilson talks new Muscle Shoals album, Led Zeppelin, Heart’s classics and the future
Throughout “Fierce Bliss,” Wilson thrives amid a set of vibey hard-rock and acoustic atmospherics, as heard on standout tracks like “Black Wing,” “A Moment in Heaven,” “Fighten Fer Life” and “As The World Turns.” She brings her Valkyrie-vocals to a handful of deftly selected covers, including Robin Trower’s transcendental blues “Bridge of Sighs” and the Eurythmics’ lusty “Missionary Man.”
Ann, your new album “Fierce Bliss” sounds awesome. How did recording at FAME Studios help shape this album? Several songs on the new “Fierce Bliss” album, and many of favorites, like “As the World Turns,” “Black Wing,” “A Moment in Heaven,” have this jammy hard-rock vibe. You’ve been there before with songs like “Mistral Wind” . Why does that kind of music feel so good to you?
I think people tend to underrate the importance of the bass in a band. There’s this stereotype that the bass player doesn’t have to work very hard, and he’s kind of a dumb guy and all this stuff, you know. And that’s really not true. It’s the very basis of the trunk of the tree of the architecture of the band.
But I’d be interested in the creative part of it, for sure, because that’s what I think I could do. I don’t know anything about keeping musicians in line or calling them up and saying, “Get out of bed. You’re supposed to be in the studio,” you know, that kind of stuff. The types of things that I thought about for this record were - like in that song “As The World Turns” - it just seems when you’re in the drama of life, close up and it’s all around you, it seems like it’s suffocating and stressful and everything. But if you pull-focus and look at the big picture, really, it’s not that big and the world keeps on turning. So a couple of the songs have that theme.
But basically, I think a good song is a good song. And it’s timeless. And it can go through different singers and different covers and become a standard, sort of like “Alone.” So yeah, I just take them one at a time. It also fits the music on here. The cover art for the album really draws you in. Did you give Roger Dean carte blanche on this or give him some guidance for the art?
Yeah, they had a great harmony ideas going. Never sweet harmonies, always wide intervals that were sort of haunting and dangerous sounding. And so when they asked me to come saying I was thrilled because I’ve always loved to sing harmonies, and just sitting down and singing with Layne and Jerry , it was totally cool.
For your upcoming solo shows, what can people expect in the setlist, in addition to the new solo material and some Heart classics? Live, you often do some covers too, like The Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels” in the past. Some Jeff Buckley.
