RTE star Anna Geary urges teenage girls to play on saying you can be sporty and feminine
Anna Geary is paving the way for girls to stay in sport by urging teens that brains, beauty and training can go hand in hand.Anna’s task was to recruit teenage girls from an inner city Dublin school in Ringsend to join a GAA football team.Anna, 33, told the Sunday Mirror: “A lot of them gave up sport in their teens and told me they didn’t think they were the sporty type.“We’re nearly losing sight of what sport is meant to be if people believe we wouldn’t belong in that circle.
The Ireland’s Fittest Families star is a trained life coach and said she embraces her feminine side while striving for sports perfection. She added: “I would be very aware of this as a sportsperson, when I was a player – wearing tan became a ritual, part of my pre-match prep.“It’s really important for teenage girls to realise it doesn’t have to be an either or.
“I got hundreds of messages during Dancing With The Stars from girls who said they dropped out of sport because they were afraid they’d look a certain way. In 2014, when I was the Cork captain, I also became the Cork Rose – it wasn’t like I was ever trying to make a statement. “But why can’t you be both and do something like the Rose of Tralee for a once in a lifetime experience, dress up and experience new things?”
