It's set to be a huge day for the future of Ireland's lockdown
After nearly two years of having their doors shut, pubs and restaurants who can only serve indoors were expecting to reopen on July 5 after the date was signalled by officials earlier this year.At the same time, there is set to be two key changes to Ireland's vaccination programme after the National Public Health Emergency Team met with the Cabinet leaders on Monday night.
The medical experts presented an analysis to senior ministers that showed there could be thousands of cases a day by August if we proceed with a widespread reopening. But the dire prospect shown by NPHET means Government ministers will this morning battle to save the summer for hospitality while respecting the “serious” NPHET warnings about the Delta variant.
Hundreds of thousands of people waiting on their second vaccine can now expect to be fully vaccinated sooner. While younger people can also be expected to get their vaccine sooner if the government adopts NIAC’s advice, which is likely.Senior Government ministers have been discussing a “compromise” reopening of bars and restaurants indoors from next Monday.
