Anthony Joshua confirms new trainer who led two fighters to unification glory in 2022
Anthony Joshua has now officially appointed Derrick James as his new head trainer ahead of his comeback fight against Jermaine Franklin on April 1.
The former unified heavyweight world champion is set to return after the Oleksandr Usyk defeats as he takes on theAJ previously visited Derrick James gym in Texas and now the pair will be working togetherAJ had previously trained in Sheffield with Robert McCracken for a large portion of his career until his first loss to Usyk in 2021.Joshua decided to link up with Robert Garcia and brought him to the UK to prepare for the second bout with Usyk.
James is the trainer of unified WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight world champion, Errol Spence and undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super welterweight king, Jermell Charlo.He guided both Spence and Charlo to unification victories in 2022 and was thought of by many to be the deserving Trainer of the Year.The news of Joshua’s link-up with James was one of the worst kept secrets in boxing, and was officially confirmed along with the announcement of the Franklin fight on Monday.
