United Way of Metro Chicago’s April Food Day: About 100,000 pounds of food was collected and aimed to be distributed to various charities in the Southland.
“I think it’s great seeing all of this food being donated to the less fortunate,” said Neftaly Moran, of Midlothian, who was organizing the food with fellow volunteers from the Meridian Heathcare Group.
Johanns Williams, the chair of the United Way South-Southwest Regional Board, said he’s thrilled with all of the food collected. His first April Food collection was April 18, 2013 at the now-defunct Lincoln Mall in Matteson. “It was rainy that day and we had one table and seven volunteers,” he said. “We brought in between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds of food. The rain was unrelenting and it kept a lot of people from coming out.Williams said according to United Way research, 52% of Ford Heights families live with food insecurity, as do 42% in Riverdale and 40% in Robbins. He said there are other areas that register over 30%. Williams described food insecurity as not knowing where the next meal is coming from.
Research also showed there is a 29% rate of food insecurity among Black families in Cook County, 24% among Latino families and 11% among white families. In 2021, United Way provided more than 190,000 meals to people in need and close to 900,000 people applied for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from March 2020 to June 2021.
“That’s why events like April Food Day remain a piece of a puzzle,” Williams said. “We are stocking pantry shelves and providing food for our neighbors across the Southland.”
