Former England goalkeeper David James has been impressed with Leeds United youngster Gray
Leeds United's Archie Gray continued his remarkable development this season with a goal on his debut for England Under-21s against Azerbaijan this week. The Whites youngster has made huge strides this term, becoming an integral part of Daniel Farke's promotion-chasing side and winning international recognition along the way.
Stones, like Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool, is pioneering the art of a defender playing as a midfielder when in position for City, as Pep Guardiola continues to develop his squad. Former England goalkeeper David James was commentating on the U21 win, and made the observation when watching Gray in action.
“Whereas, as we’ve seen in the Premier League and in international football, if you’ve got that versatility, John Stones is probably the best example at the moment of a senior player. Gray broke through as a central midfielder, but has been used at right-back by Daniel Farke this term, starting ahead of the likes of Luke Ayling and Djed Spence before the pair left in January. Connor Roberts was signed on loan from Burnley in the winter window, but Gray has largely kept his place in the side.
