A new study of 20,000 Americans found that putting off retirement until 67 helped with issues of cognitive decline. As part of this focus, the team recruited 12 subjects to test the benefits of various techniques. These included: fasting for 20 hours; light exercise ; high-intensity exercise ; and a combination of both fasting and exercise.
They discovered that engaging in a short but intense bout of exercise was the best way to increase production of BDNF compared to one day of fasting . Intense exercise increased BDNF levels four to five times more than just fasting or light exercise . Although the reason for these differences remains unclear, one hypothesis presented by the team relates to the cerebral substrate switch and glucose metabolism, which serves as the brain’s main source of fuel. The substrate switch refers to the process by which the brain stops using its preferred choice of fuel in favour of another source to ensure the body’s energy needs are met. This can include, for example, when the brain metabolizes lactate instead of glucose while exercising.
