I know you care about the sharing platform, and I love the big, blustering cauldron of showing off that is Instagram too: I love the virtue signaling, I love the gloating, I sort of love the creeping dysmorphia every time I scroll through someone’s holiday photos, I love going to a restaurant abroad and using their tagged pics as my menu.
One person who has kept us all online this week, however, is Ben Affleck, the titular character in the Sad Affleck meme franchise. Hollywood is ten a penny with hots, all packed like bangable sardines into the 30 square miles of Tinseltown—and Ben is no exception. But while Ben is hot, it’s really his semipermanent frown that keeps us gripped. Indeed, the discrepancy between his hotness and his glowering emotional state beggars belief.
The man feels perpetually on the verge of tears, and yet it never seems to taint his beauty. I think it began with the eyes-closedgrimace in a blue sweater in 2016. We all know where we were when we first saw his back art, the boy with a dragon tattoo looking wistfully out to sea. We’ve seen him dissociating at a press junket and watched as he dove for his Dunkin’ Donuts order on his own doorstep.
Of course, Affleck does have his own unique reasons for letting it all hang out, for living his truth in the most unvarnished way possible. Dashing looks aside, he’s absolutely been through the wringer over the past few years, facing addiction, rehabilitation, and even a much-publicized divorce.
