The win by the Wildcats (5-7, 3-6) snapped ASU's five-game win streak in the storied series which dates back to 1899.
It isn't the first time Bourguet has played against the Wildcats though. He did so for the first time in 2021, the game ASU won in Tucson 70-7. With the outcome well in hand, Bourguet saw some mop-up duty in that one, throwing for 24 yards in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats, who improved in the win column this season by four games in Jedd Fisch's second year, got some big plays in the third quarter and benefited from an ASU fumble in surging out to a 31-21. The Sun Devils didn't flinch, going back out in front at 35-31 on a 4-yard scoring toss from Bourget to Jalin Conyers with 11:04 left in the game.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback had been praised for his work ethic and his studious nature, which made him perfect for the scout team. He didn't really sniff a more prominent role because a much-heralded Jayden Daniels arrived in 2019 and started all but one game in his three years at ASU. Bourguet's shot at the starting job took a hit as he had foot surgery right after spring drills concluded. He had sustained the foot injury in the season opener against Southern Utah but opted to wait to have that corrected.His first real shot at significant playing time came against Washington after Jones departed in the second quarter after a hard hit. The Tucson native was 15-for-21 for 182 yards in leading the Sun Devils to a 45-38 win over the then No. 21 Huskies.
