'It just showed if people believe in what they’re doing and there’s a continuity within the group and it’s all about moving the county forward and it’s not about any individual, I think that’s the most important thing.'

Incoming Leitrim boss Mickey Graham has said that Armagh’s breakthrough can serve as an inspiration to his players.

But McGeeney maintained the core of the squad over a long period of time, something that Graham says Leitrim are tapping into now having just come out of Division Four.“They’ve hit the post so many times and come up short so many times and it’d be very easy for players and management to say, ‘This is not to be, we’re not going to get over the line’ but they showed serious resilience to keep coming back after coming up short so many times.

“Obviously added a few new faces along the way as every county does but the core group was always there and I think that when things are going bad, that’s when you need lads to stick at it and keep at it and eventually if you keep knocking at that door sometimes then that door will open for you but you need a wee bit of luck along the way like everything else as well.”

“The county board came knocking and they were looking for continuity but also I had players on, wanting to know would I be interested in stepping up and taking over the reins and, in fairness, there’s a great structure in place in Leitrim football at the moment. The commute is not too taxing from his base in Cavan town either and Graham admitted that the fact that Leitrim operate in Division Three, one below Cavan, and in a different province to his native county was a factor too.
