The incident began with an armed robbery at a retail store on Marewood Crescent in Ballymun, where the suspect brandished a knife, threatened employees, and stole property. Following a pursuit, the suspect was cornered in a housing estate, brandishing a knife and engaging in verbal confrontations with armed Gardaí. Less-than-lethal force options, including 40mm munitions, a Taser, and OC spray, were deployed in the arrest.
A dangerous and violent criminal remains in garda custody tonight after he was arrested brandishing a knife in a housing estate following an armed robbery at a retail premises in a Dublin suburb. The criminal, who has racked up more than 100 convictions, was surrounded by Gardaí armed with a weapon and extendable batons as he stood in the front garden of a house in the Ballymun area with the weapon in his hand.
Gardaí were responding to reports of a robbery at a retail premises on Marewood Crescent in Ballymun where a male entered the store brandishing a knife, threatening staff and removing property before leaving on foot. Video footage seen by the Irish Mirror shows Gardaí trying to negotiate with the violent criminal, who attacked prison officers while serving time behind bars, while he was brandishing a large knife. The criminal is heard saying “I give as good as I get,” and “Shoot me,” with one armed officer telling him: “If you drop that, I’ll pull back. I promise you I’ll pull back.” Another officer is heard telling him “Think about it, throw it on the ground or over the wall.” In another video the officers are seen running after the criminal - who spent time in the Violence Reduction Unit at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, on a green area shouting “Drop the knife” as he continues to branish it in front of them. Officers used less than lethal force options including the use of 40mm direct impact munitions, Taser and OC spray in the arrest of the male. In a statement Gardaí said: “Gardaí in Ballymun have arrested a man in his 30s following a robbery in the Ballymun area of Dublin on Sunday, February 9. “Shortly before 2:30 pm, Gardaí responded to reports of a robbery at a retail premises on Marewood Crescent, Ballymun. A man entered the store brandishing a knife, threatened staff and removed property before leaving on foot. “In a follow-up operation involving local uniformed and armed Gardaí from Ballymun Station, supported by the ASU, a man in his 30s was arrested in the Sandyhill Gardens area. “He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in the Dublin Region in connection with this incident and a number of similar robberies in recent days. “Less than lethal force options were deployed by Gardaí in the arrest of the individual,” the press statement said. Investigations are ongoing.
