★★★ Lesley Chilcott is credited as the director of this jolly, undemanding series but there is never any question that it is Schwarzenegger who is really pulling the strings 🖊️ Ed Power
Everything we see about his life and career is filtered through his own perspective and he’s on screen throughout, enthusiastically narrating archive footage of his time as a champion bodybuilder and his days as the biggest ham in Hollywood.is entertaining primarily because of the star’s charisma. He may never have had the best acting chops but in terms of humour and self-awareness he was in a league of his own among action heroes. He was the savviest too.
“You have to sell everything,” he says at one point. “No matter what you do in life, you have to sell it.” Schwarzenegger hawked his muscles as Mr Universe, his one-liners during his days as king of the multiplex and his status as a political outsider when elected Governor of California in 2003. He was a star but, more than that, he was a world-class hustler, constantly trying to win people over to his side.
His political career is covered in the final episode, when Chilcott finally grabs the live rail and addresses the scandals in which Schwarzenegger has been embroiled. As a movie star, his bad behaviour was overlooked but once he got into politics, newspapers reported on claims that he groped multiple women.“Personally, I was surprised that it didn’t have more of an effect on the election,” says thereporter who broke the story when Schwarzenegger ran for Governor of California.
Schwarzenegger, seated at a desk in his huge mansion, takes responsibility for his actions. “My reaction in the beginning, I was kind of… defensive,” he says, matter-of-factly and without embarrassment. “It was bullshit. Forget all the excuses, it was wrong.”, something he kept secret from his wife, Maria Shriver. But Chilcott doesn’t probe further or consider how Schwarzenegger’s son, Joseph, felt about his father refusing to acknowledge his parenthood publicly.
