Police in Northern Ireland are investigating an incident of suspected arson after a fire at a property in Rathglynn, Co Antrim, left a woman in her 70s hospitalized. Two other people, both in their 40s, were also injured while attempting to rescue the elderly woman. Detectives are appealing for information from the public to help with their investigation.
An investigation has been launched following an incident of suspected arson with intent in Co Antrim in the early hours of this morning. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have issued an appeal for information after reports that a property in Rathglyn n was set alight shortly before 3.30am on Tuesday morning, January 21. A woman aged in her 70s was inside the property at the time and she has since been hospitalised.
Two other people aged in their 40s who suffered injuries as they attempted to come to her aid have also been hospitalized. Detective Sergeant Crothers said: 'At around 3:20am, it was reported to police that a property in the area was set alight. It was reported that a woman in her 70s was inside the property at the time. She was taken to hospital for treatment to burns to her hands and smoke inhalation following the incident. 'A woman aged in her 40s was treated for both smoke inhalation and injuries to her hands, as she attempted to free the woman from the property. Another man, also aged in his 40s was also treated for smoke inhalation as he attempted to provide assistance. Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, who were already in attendance, dealt with the fire. 'The property was significantly damaged and at this stage, the incident is being treated as arson with intent.'
