Riley Robinson, director of Artpace San Antonio, stands in the workshop where resident artists create their work.Inside Artpace San Antonio, an art gallery and studio space in west downtown, there is a towering wall that displays the names of more than 260 artists from places like London; Havana; and Bangalore, India; as well as San Antonio and other Texas cities.
Artpace provides each artist with a free apartment on its second floor, $6,000 for living expenses, a $10,000 grant to use in making art, and access to studio space, including a workshop across the street filled with equipment such as a welding machine and a sandblaster. “We don’t really put any restrictions on the artists,” Robinson said. “I don’t go in and tell them, ‘Hey, look, I don’t think people are going to understand the Peruvian Civil War from 1885, so I just want you to do something else.’”Making art ‘accessible’: San Antonio artists, community members come together to decorate sidewalks, pavement
Robinson, who also works as a sculptor, recently sat to discuss the artist-in-residence program, the San Antonio arts scene and the nonprofit’s plan to convert its rooftop into event space.
