Vaccination verification is happening on the coasts as well as the middle of the country

, the SMART Health Card is currently offered in nine states — California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Utah, Virginia and Washington — as well as Puerto Rico. Four more states — Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Oregon — are on the verge of launching apps using SMART Health Card technology.

Behind them, expect an avalanche of similar state apps in early 2022. “The watershed moment is very much right upon us,” says Brian Anderson, co-founder of the VCI and chief digital health physician at , a not-for-profit organization that provides technical guidance for the government on issues of national concern.

“We’re working with approximately 20 other states that are not ready to publicly announce the issuance of these credentials, but we're working with their development teams,” Anderson says, noting that majority of new state apps are coming “in the earlier part of Q1.” Even if your state is not developing a vaccine verification app, there are other ways to obtain a digital SMART Health Card. For example, you can get one if you were vaccinated at a Walmart, Sam’s Club, CVS, Costco, Kroger or any of the dozens of other companies participating in the In addition, your healthcare provider or health insurance company may be able to provide you with a SMART Health Card. Dozens of across the country now offer digital vaccine cards to patients.
