In one supermarket the cost of ten, basic maxi pads had doubled over the past year.

Advocates insist these measures go nowhere near enough and say charities – facing their own pressures as regular donations drop amid the squeeze on living costs – cannot meet demand forever. Grocott says: “It’s saying that the needs of women and people who have periods don’t matter enough.
