A person died over the weekend after the Tesla they were riding in on Interstate 580 crashed and caught fire, and a man was later arrested on suspicion of multiple charges in connection, authorities said.
In statements Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said officers responded at 10:23 p.m. Saturday to westbound Interstate 580 lanes west of Castro Valley Boulevard for reports of a possible solo collision. Alameda County Fire Department firefighters also responded to the scene, providing care to two Tesla passengers who managed to get out. The passengers, a San Francisco man and Oakland woman who had worn their seatbelts, were later taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for treatment of moderate injuries.
The Tesla’s driver, a 64-year-old Oakland man, managed to escape and went home, where officers found and arrested him. He was taken to ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton for treatment of minor injuries.
