A union source told i that train drivers are determined to hold out for a good offer as thousands prepare to walk out tomorrow
that further action was being considered, contingent on negotiations with the Government and rail operators.Network Rail has warned of “significantly reduced” services from tomorrow until Friday and knock-on disruption on Saturday, with passengers advised to check travel plans ahead of time.
All pay increases must be signed off by the Government, which has been responsible for train operators’ finances since 2020 when Covid lockdowns threatened to see them go bust. Aslef negotiations have progressed at a slower pace than those carried out by fellow rail union, the RMT, which is currently considering an offer of a 9 per cent pay rise for its members over the next two years.
Sources in the union pointed to previous negotiations which have seen double-figure pay increases – and its reputation for striking good deals for its members – as reasons for refusing the offer.
