The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland has directed its members not to co-operate with the Government's plan for the partial reopening of schools.
It said its decision is based on significant concerns about the health and safety of students, teachers and other staff. Speaking to RTÉ, Mr Christie said ASTI "would not rule anything out" and that there was "plenty of opportunities between now and Monday for the Minister to come to her senses". However, Leaving Certificate students will be allowed to attend three days a week. It is at schools' own discretion whether students attend on consecutive days or spaced over the week.
"So we remain concerned now about our ability to assure the continuing provision of any of the core public services that we have talked about as being key things that we try to protect, and education is one of those." INTO said it has sought a meeting with the Department of Education, as have other teacher trade unions.
Barbara Ennis was speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime after the college opted to defy the Government decision to reopen for Leaving Cert students. Colm O'Rourke, who is the Principal of St Patrick's All Boys Classical School in Navan, said the decision to allow Leaving Cert students return to the classroom is playing Russian roulette with the health of students and teachers.
