Aston Villa strengthened their squad with defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton and winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £47m. Hull City added a Belgium international ahead of their top-flight campaign.

Aston Villa continued their squad rebuild from a summer of departures with the signing of defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton. Photograph: Joe Giddens/PA Wirehave made a double move on deadline day, signing Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain in a reported club-record £47m deal, and completing a move for England defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who is the son-in-law of Roy Keane, from Southampton.

Grealish moved to the Hill Dickinson stadium on loan last summer but, after scoring two goals and registering six assists in an impressive first half of the campaign, he suffered a stress fracture in his foot in January. The deal for Grealish to return to Everton comes at the same time as City have agreed a fee worth up to £65m for Toffees winger Iliman Ndiaye.

The 21-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Tigers and becomes the club’s 13th signing securing promotion to the top flight. The 21-year-old Belgium international has been given permission to travel to the north east to wrap up a move which would see him sign a contract until 2031. Tottenham are set to make a double signing from Chelsea after agreeing deals to take Mykhailo Mudryk on loan and buy Tosin Adarabioyo.

The move for Mudryk will reunite Roberto De Zerbi with a player he coached at Shakhtar Donetsk before the midfielder was sold to Chelsea in an £89 million deal in 2023. However, Mudryk only returned from a 20-month suspension last month after returning an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium in 2024.

Meanwhile, Adarabioyo is set to join for a fee of £7m, a deal which will allow Kevin Danso to join Sunderland. MOST READ A Wicklow woman in Marbella: ‘I would make friends in the summer and they would then go home.

Premier League: Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 1 (Saka 59)Premier League: Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 1 (Saka 59)The smile on Declan Rice's face a few minutes from time said it all. The Arsenal midfielder had just shut down Ian Maatsen as the Aston Villa full-back zoomed into the box. Arsenal were hardly imperious, Bukayo Saka scoring the only goal, but Unai Emery's side struggled to hurt the champions, David Raya untroubled. The records will show Villa have lost their first two league matches of a season without scoring for the first time since 2002 but, despite successive defeats, this time there was no capitulation. For Villa, this was a marked improvement on defeat at Brighton in their opener. After 31 minutes in their last game, they trailed 4-0 and after 40 were down to 10 men. Here they could take plenty of encouragement from a promising first-half performance, the debutants Zion Suzuki and Nicolas Jackson impressing, having taken the Nos 1 and 11 vacated by Emiliano Martínez and Ollie Watkins respectively. Suzuki's eye for a pass was particularly noticeable, pinging 50-yard balls to the 19-year-old George Hemmings and John McGinn, the pair operating on opposite flanks. Suzuki and Jackson were the only changes to Villa's starting XI but they appeared far more cohesive, Ross Barkley partnering Boubacar Kamara at the base of midfield. Emi Buendía smacked the crossbar after Kamara overawed Christos Tzolis - Martin Ødegaard subsequently asked questions of the referee, Jarred Gillett - but Jackson otherwise created Villa's best opening. The Senegal forward, who worked under Emery at Villarreal, pinched possession from Gabriel Magalhães a few yards into the Villa half and galloped into the other before sending in a near-perfect cross from the right. Hemmings burst into the six-yard box but was unable to convert. How Villa welcomed having an orthodox striker on the pitch after Watkins's omission at Brighton. This was an advert for a new-look Villa, on and off the pitch.
