With Zack Greinke officially gone to Kansas City, Astros players and officials fondly...

Zack Greinke was dubbed"the most interesting man in baseball" by now-former Astros teammate Martín Maldonado.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Astros bid adieu to Zack Greinke on Thursday, one day after his deal with the Kansas City Royals became official. Manager Dusty Baker said he fielded multiple calls from organizations interested in Greinke this winter. Baker seemed to give nothing but glowing reviews.

“He was easy,” Baker said. “You just leave him alone. He’s one of the easiest guys I ever had to manage. He was cordial. He always paid attention. He’s a bright young man. He was like having another coach because he didn’t miss anything — if guys weren’t warming up right between innings. He helped us in a lot of ways.”Greinke signed a one-year deal worth $13 million to reunite with the Royals, the organization that drafted him in 2002.

A deal with Detroit would have reunited Greinke with former Houston manager A.J. Hinch. Instead, the 37-year-old righthander will pitch in Kansas City where it all began. Greinke told Royals reporters Thursday he plans on pitching longer than just his one-year deal. Greinke appeared in 52 games as an Astro, accumulated a 3.89 ERA and threw 300 ⅔ innings. Of more importance to Greinke himself, he finished his Astros career with three hits, including two during the World Series against Atlanta. The new universal designated hitter means Greinke may never reach his ultimate career goal — 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He still sits at nine apiece headed back to Kansas City.
