A cascade of poor pitches and defensive mistakes erased the Astros' three-run lead in one wretched inning.
Oakland Athletics' Seth Brown, bottom left, slides safely past Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado to score on Stephen Vogt's sacrifice fly during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, July 17, 2022, in Houston. The Astros entered their final game before the All-Star break in a best-case scenario, boasting a fresh bullpen and a lineup featuring their best-available healthy players against a hapless division foe.
Astros starter Jake Odorizzi allowed his first run of the game on a one-out solo home run in the sixth inning. Disaster sank in its teeth thereafter. Odorizzi gave up a single, then mishandled a comebacker and made a throwing error that allowed the lead runner to advance to third base. The Astros closed the first half of the season with a series loss to the A’s, defeated in the finale 4-3 on Sunday at Minute Maid Park.
Odorizzi shut out the A’s for five innings but was charged with all three earned runs from the sixth inning while securing one out. He finished the first half with a 3.56 ERA in 48 innings pitched for Houston.
